36th Street Subway Station in Brooklyn, New York
The 36th Street subway station is located in Brooklyn at 36th Street and Fourth Avenue. This station serves trains on the BMT Fourth Avenue Line. It is also one of the two stations served by the R train. A few northbound Q trains and several D and N-trains run through the station during rush hours.
The subway station is located in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. 36th Street is a block from the Gowanus expressway. The station is not currently for rent. However, it has been sold in the past. The last price the building has been listed at was $42,727 in 1981.
36th Street station was constructed as part of the Fourth Avenue Line. It opened on June 22, 1915. In 1925, the Fourth Avenue subway was extended to 95th St. The station has two island platforms. An open northern mezzanine has a signal relay room. There are also columns on the southbound platforms. Some of the mosaics inside the mezzanine are indicating Coney Island and Downtown.
The station is connected to the BMT West End Line by turnouts. At one point, a local track on the line was planned to connect at grade. As a result, the second southern mezzanine was closed. One of the trackways is still in place south of the ramp to the West End Line.
There are no other lines running through the station. The station is a local stop, meaning trains are not express. You can switch to a D or N-train if you are headed to Brooklyn. However, the D train has express service.
The 4th Avenue line is an interconnected subway that runs from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Sea Beach in Brooklyn. It is operated by BMT, a subsidiary of New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority. There are four tracks between 59th and 65th Streets. Each track is about 70 feet wide and about 10 feet deep.
Two street stairs are available to access the northwest corner of 4th Avenue and 36th Street. Another stair leads to the northeast corner. Currently, the station is in need of new elevators. During the 2020-2024 Capital Program, the subway platform will be lengthened and the station will receive elevators.
The station is also in need of a new entrance. There was a petition to add an entrance from 33rd Street and Fourth Avenue, but it was rejected by the New York State Transit Commission. After the petition was turned down, the entry was moved to the sidewalks in 1929.
The station is also a target of crime. There was a reported mass shooting in the subway on Tuesday, May 17, 2010. There were undetonated devices in the area at the time of the incident. According to police, a male suspect wearing a gas mask was found and he may have been the gunman. If you see something suspicious, call 911.
