Early Life and Education

Baal was the fertility god at Ugarit, and tablets found there depict him engaging in a vicious struggle against Mot, the god of death and sterility. If Baal won, then seven years of abundance would ensue; otherwise famine and drought would ensue.

Adam Baals is a Jewish mystic widely credited with being the founder of Hasidic Judaism. Various tales about Adam can be found in Yiddish pamphlets published in Prague and Amsterdam during the 17th century; his real name was Avraham David Moshe.

At various points during his life, Baal Shem Tov felt an intense longing to immigrate to Israel; unfortunately his personal circumstances prevented this from occurring.
