Alexandra Adams – Provost Distinguished Lecturer Series

Alexandra Adams, director of Montana State’s Center for American Indian and Rural Health Equity (CAIRHE), is well known for her work with indigenous communities and will share this at MSU’s Provost Distinguished Lecturer Series.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that she was fatally shot while walking in Lafreniere Park with her son and friend.

Early Life and Education

Adams serves as Director of the Center for American Indian and Rural Health Equity (CAIRHE). In this capacity, she conducts research on topics including obesity and food insecurity among American Indian communities. Furthermore, she works to foster community-based participatory research with native populations as well as create family wellness programs to heal past and current trauma.

As one of the UK’s first deafblind students studying to become doctors, she has encountered prejudice and misjudgement both personally and professionally. Alongside working for BLH, she has given numerous presentations both nationally and internationally on disability rights and culture change.

Adams brings extensive expertise in enrollment services, student retention programs and student success programs from her work at institutions in Philadelphia, Memphis and Indiana.

Professional Career

Alexandra Adams has set herself the goal of becoming the first deaf-blind medical doctor in her country, documenting her journey on TikTok and other social media platforms so as to share her story and disprove stereotypes associated with disabled communities.

She has worked on multiple civil rights class actions, such as the 2020 George Floyd case against NYPD’s illegal stop and frisk tactics, and co-authored a supplemental brief on damages apportionment in wrongful conviction cases.

Adams will oversee enrollment services, student retention and success programs and athletics at Avila University Kansas City in her new position. She brings 28 years of higher education experience from colleges in Philadelphia as well as elsewhere – she is an advocate for first-generation students whose needs jive well with Avila’s mission and student population.
