Ben Shields is an MIT Sloan Senior Lecturer of Managerial Communication. He offers several graduate-level courses such as Social Media Management and Sports Strategy and Analytics.

He also developed and teaches two open enrollment programs – Data-Driven Teams and Communication for Leaders.

Early Life and Education

At Oak Ridge Military Academy and later UNC, he went on to study engineering. Additionally, he played minor league baseball for Richmond Colts as a southpaw pitcher who batted left-handed and threw right-handed.

He had a deep appreciation for people, real estate, pheasant hunting and traveling. In Rangeley he and his wife co-founded Crown Capital Securities where they collaborated closely for many years before retiring together.

Professional Career

Ben Shields is an actor, filmmaker and performance union member of Actors Equity Association, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and American Guild of Musical Artists performance unions. Additionally he belongs to Black Repertory Theatre where he won an Audie Landau Deliberateur Community Orchestra award as Outstanding Director in 2010.

At the MIT Sloan School of Management, he designed and taught courses on digital transformation in sports, media and entertainment. His research interests center on using social media for business purposes as well as its impact on society and culture.

Ben was known as Lefty or Big Ben during his Major League Baseball pitching days from 1924-1931 with the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. He batted right-handed and threw left-handed. Additionally he established and built Crown Capital Securities with his partners and friends; enjoyed traveling as well as hosting parties at home; loved real estate investing and snow skiing – particularly Center Hill Lake where his home resided – along with being an outstanding businessman and family man.

Shields joined MIT Sloan School of Management as a lecturer of managerial communication in 2014. His courses, Communication for Leaders and Advanced Leadership Communication, explore best practices in leadership as well as how communications plays an integral part of contemporary business operations.

Shields has also recently developed and taught a course entitled Social Media Management: Persuasion in Networked Culture, using his sports industry knowledge to investigate how recent social media trends and data collection initiatives impact fan behavior.
