Benjamin Schall Joins AvalonBay Communities As President and Director
Benjamin Schall has been appointed president and board member at AvalonBay Communities, replacing Timothy J. Naughton who will step down as CEO.
Schall currently serves as President, Chief Executive Officer and Trustee for Seritage Growth Properties LP. Prior to that role, he served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Rouse Properties Inc. – a public REIT which owned and managed regional malls across 21 states – where he also held his CCO post.

Ben Schall attended Swarthmore College and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School. An expert in real estate investment, he has held senior roles at Rouse Properties Inc, Vornado Realty Trust and New York City Economic Development Corporation – where he was President & Director for six years prior to joining AvalonBay Communities as both President & Director in 2020 – previously holding positions as CEO/President before leaving Seritage Growth Properties to join AvalonBay Communities where his salary now sits around $1 Million making him the second highest paid employee at AvalonBay Communities
Professional Career
Benjamin Schall is a real estate industry veteran with extensive experience. Known for his creativity and passion, he has held senior leadership roles at public companies including Rouse Properties Inc, Vornado Realty Trust, and New York City Economic Development Corporation.
Since 2022, he has served as president and CEO of AvalonBay Communities Inc, an equity real estate investment trust which invests in income producing properties while managing them.
Prior to joining AvalonBay, Mr. Lanier served as president and chief executive officer of Seritage Growth Properties, a publicly traded real estate investment trust which owns, operates, and manages regional malls throughout the US. In addition, Vornado Realty Trust appointed him a senior vice president.

Schall has served as an assistant football coach at Dublin Scioto, Logan Elm and Grove City Christian. Junior Jimmy Suhayda expects to play wide receiver, tight end and linebacker under Schall this year.
Schall serves as Greenberg Visiting Professor remotely for Winter Quarter 2022 and has co-organized various refereed conference panels, such as “Deep Neural Networks and Philosophy of Science,” at St Mary’s University London 2020; and “Distance Matters in Scientific Advance,” 11th International Conference on Philosophy of Team Science Durham 2021.
Personal Life
Schall is well known for his creativity and passion, having held key positions at companies like Rouse Properties Inc and Vornado Realty Trust before. He earned both an undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College and master’s in business administration from Harvard Business School.
On Thursday, AvalonBay Communities appointed Robert Schall president of their real estate investment company and joined its board.
Schall previously competed in mixed martial arts for various organizations including UFC and Extreme Challenge. He earned himself the moniker “Meat Truck” due to his large frame and powerful punches. His last bout came at IGF:MMA Global Invasion against Satoshi Ishii where he lost via submission in the first round. Amanda Vandeberg RN is his wife; together they have two children.
