NFL Head Coach Daniel Harbaugh Could Reconsider His Future
Leading an elite Power Five program requires year-round commitment that involves coaching during the season, attending practices and recruiting prospects. Harbaugh may feel burdened by these duties, which may lead him to reconsider his future in college football.
His recent clash with athletic director Warde Manuel doesn’t help matters either.
Early Life and Education
Harbaugh’s success at Stanford includes turning around an underperforming program and leading them to an impressive 12-1 record in 2010, including an Orange Bowl victory. During that same time period he also tutored future 49ers quarterback Andrew Luck who would later lead the league in passing yards and touchdowns.
McGivern recalls how the two remained close throughout their friendship, sharing many interests. For dinnertime viewing sessions they would watch an episode from a sitcom until its completion – something McGivern recalls fondly.
Harbaugh’s mother, Ellen, worked as a teacher and school counselor in Marshalltown Area Schools for 23 years, known for her outreach programs such as “Books and Beasties,” pairing children with stuffed animals representing characters from books. Unfortunately she died April 20, 2023.
Professional Career
Harbaugh spent most of his NFL coaching career as both special teams coach and secondary coach. His first position came with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1998 where his special teams consistently placed among the league’s elite – five out of six seasons they were listed among The Dallas Morning News’ special teams rankings!
At Miami, he returned as wide receivers and special teams coach under head coach Paul Brown, becoming part of its famed Cradle of Coaches along with Earl “Red” Blaik, Paul Brown, Carm Cozza, Weeb Ewbank, Jim Harbaugh (current University of Michigan head coach). Additionally he spent one season at Morehead State in 1988 as defensive backs coach/special teams coordinator.
Achievement and Honors
He holds the fourth-most NFL wins (including playoffs) since 2008 for any coach, as well as being the only modern coach to lead his team to championship in each of their first four and five seasons as head coach of the Ravens.
He also led Stanford’s turnaround, leading them to a 12-1 record and their inaugural BCS bowl appearance (the FedEx Orange Bowl against Virginia Tech) in 2010. At Yale he graduated magna cum laude while co-captaining their mock trial team and writing for their student newspaper.
Harbaugh has long been an ardent supporter of our military, visiting many bases as part of the NFL’s Salute to Service program and earning himself an ESPN All-American status.
Personal Life
Harbaugh is an outspoken supporter of American soldiers and veterans. He helped establish the Ravens Military Appreciation Day during training camp and has visited numerous military bases around the United States and overseas. Furthermore, he hosts wounded warriors for home games as guests of honor while giving New Era hats directly to troops stationed there.
Harbaugh and Joani Harbaugh have five children together; Alison plays Division I women’s lacrosse for Notre Dame University despite recently being diagnosed with cancer; however, her father remains supportive of her goals as an athlete.
Harbaugh is an avid sports fan who takes great pleasure in golfing, basketball and fishing. Known as an intense competitor on the football field, Harbaugh has developed an unmistakable sideline demeanor known for provoking rival teams – an eagerness that extends even beyond rivalry to trash talking!
