The Life of Daniel Mahoney

Mahoney was an accomplished business executive in the semiconductor and solid-state storage industries. He held numerous leadership roles – such as being CEO of Fastor Systems.

Mahoney currently holds the Augustinian Boulanger Chair and teaches political science at Assumption College. His expertise lies in French philosophy; more recently, he’s working on writing an Encounter Books book about Roger Scruton’s thought.

Early Life and Education

He also served on the Board of ALVA and as an instructor at Gonzaga University’s School of Professional (Leadership) Studies in Spokane, Washington. Additionally, he was the Executive Editor for Perspectives on Political Science journal.

He specializes in French political philosophy and anti-totalitarian thinking, particularly the work of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. He has published many books related to these subjects such as The Liberal Political Science of Raymond Aron; The Conservative Foundations of Liberal Order; and The Other Solzhenitsyn.

He and Barbara had been married for 52 years and together raised five children: Dan Mahoney of Burlington with Kathy; Mark from Northboro with Nancy; Terry Giannetto from Billerica with Michael Giannannto as husband; Cathy Kubitz from Rochester with Kurt; and Barbie MacLeod from Tiverton.

Professional Career

Mahoney specializes in private equity, venture capital and securities law with particular expertise in mergers and acquisitions, representing clients across a range of industries from emerging start-ups to large publicly-held corporations.

He serves as Senior Fellow and Writer at Law and Liberty. Additionally, he has published multiple books including an analysis of French sociologist Raymond Aron as well as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s thought.

He has served on the boards of numerous public and privately-held companies, as well as possessing considerable expertise in corporate finance and the investment banking industry. Best Lawyers in America and Southwest Super Lawyers both recognized him as a Top Arizona Business Lawyer.

Achievement and Honors

Mahoney was an impressive donor who generously gave $1 Million to Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains – its largest gift ever in its 73 year history! This generous act will be used to establish the Mahoney Honors Academy – a new program which equips students with skills they’ll need for global economic success.

Mahoney served as a Garwood Visiting Fellow of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute and received the Paolucci Book Award, honoring thoughtful books that make important contributions to conservative literature. His book The Statesman as Thinker explores this admirable blend of magnanimity and moderation that characterizes great statesmen such as Cicero and Burke as well as Churchill and Havel.

He leaves behind an incredible legacy; wife Susan, daughters Katie and Mary Beth as well as sons Ryan and Daniel remain his adoring family, along with many cherished extended family members who have come to love him over time. His intellectual and spiritual contributions will live on through generations to come.

Personal Life

Mahoney persevered despite dyslexia to achieve his goals and join the diaconate formation program over a decade ago; although he wasn’t one of 11 men ordained in 2017, his call to ministry never wavered.

He is also an accomplished author, publishing numerous works such as The Liberal Political Science of Raymond Aron (Rowman & Littlefield, 1992); The Conservative Foundations of the Liberal Order (ISI, 2011); The Other Solzhenitsyn (St Augustine’s Press, 2014) and De Gaulle: Statesmanship, Grandeur and Modern Democracy (Encounter Books 2004).

He and Liz reside in Westbrook, Maine where they operate Morning Star Recovery as a Catholic retreat center, helping those struggling with addiction by combining Alcoholics Anonymous’ 12-step program with Catholic spirituality. Many former patients attended his ordination Mass as a mark of appreciation for all that it had done for them personally.

Mahoney earns an impressive annual income as both a professor and editor at Assumption College, in addition to holding the Augustine Chair in Distinguished Scholarship which adds even further income potential.

He provides advice to businesses and corporate boards regarding venture capital, private equity, securities law issues, general corporate matters, as well as any necessary venture capital transactions or acquisitions.
