Early Life and Education

Patsy Takemoto Mink was born in Hamakua Poko on Maui and graduated high school with honors. She then went to the University of Hawaii to obtain degrees in zoology and chemistry before applying to medical schools but being turned down due to gender.

Mink was an outspoken advocate for civil rights and equality. As a member of Congress, she worked to pass laws such as Title IX and the Women’s Educational Equity Act.

Patsy Mink was an advocate of federal funding to improve public education, particularly early childhood and college affordability. Additionally, she opposed wars such as Vietnam as well as international conflicts such as Afghanistan. After her passing away in 2002, her legacy lives on through The Patsy Mink Foundation administered by her daughter Gwendolyn.

Professional Career

Mink joined the Hawaiian territorial government upon graduation and quickly took on legal work on its behalf, challenging laws which prohibited women from taking the bar examination, while simultaneously winning her seat in its House of Representatives.

She served in Congress for 12 terms, first representing Hawaii’s at-large congressional district between 1965 and 1977 and later its second district from 1990 until her death in 2002. She authored Title IX Equal Opportunity Education Act in 1972 as well as fights civil rights campaigns.

Mink made his mark as an influential producer, songwriter and instrumentalist on numerous albums, films and television shows as a producer, songwriter and instrumentalist. He worked with major artists like Rush, k.d. lang, FM, Anne Murray Raffi Bruce Cockburn Alison Krauss Wynonna Judd.

Personal Life

Michael Mink is survived by his wife Darla Mink; son Daniel Mink of Highland Heights, Kentucky; daughter Brittany (Brandon Beshears) Mink of Somerset; two sisters Kathy Mink and Sheila Bullock both from Somerset; four grandchildren Eli Mink, Ruby Maye Mink Layne Beshears Connor Beshears as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins; his parents Burl and Ruby McCalister Mink predeceased him in death.

Daniel Mink’s company was sold around 1990 to Montreux Group company and now distributes in better department stores and jewelry stores throughout the US, along with billboard marketing campaign support. Additionally, their 1900 collection will relaunch later in 1999 with reduced store distribution but more marketing support.
