Daniel Platt is a highly experienced trial attorney and mediator, having handled arbitration and mediation cases relating to health care payor/provider contracts, commercial real estate matters, consumer class actions, securities issues, food manufacturing operations, aviation as well as trade secrets since joining JAMS 2021. Since joining, he has handled multiple arbitration/mediation proceedings.

Early Life and Education

Daniel Platt first dreamed of becoming an architect while in high school, but after studying architecture for several courses he realized it wasn’t right for him and instead decided to pursue a history degree at Loyola University Chicago.

After graduating college, he found employment at Alton Memorial Hospital in Illinois where he brought many innovations for first time to that region, including bringing many “firsts”.

He revolutionized anesthesia with endotracheal anesthesia, an easier and safer alternative to ether. He established Alton Memorial’s first coronary care room as well as closed-chest cardiac massage – now commonly referred to as CPR – first introduced in the region and taught to others. Retiring in 2002, he is survived by two of his children as well as their spouses.

Personal Life

Platt was known for his extensive work at the hospital as well as his love for athletics, golfing, tennis and leading an active life – including being an active member of a local church community.

He was known for his great integrity and firm principles, taking to heart David Crockett’s notion that you should “make sure what you are doing is right, then act.” Additionally, his wife was highly esteemed for her hospitality; many traveling teamster stopped by their home for an extra boost on their journeys.

He was married to Jo Ann Haynes for over 55 years until her passing last October 27. Platt is survived by two sons and their spouses: Drew Wall and Kristin Platt as well as Brett and Mariela Platt with five grandchildren each.

In 2012, Platt made his film debut in Pitch Perfect as Benji Applebaum and earned widespread acclaim for his performance. Pitch Perfect 2 followed suit and so too Ricki and the Flash, Run This Town and Theater Camp where Platt also played prominent roles.

His family includes Carol, his wife of 43 years; their children: Drew Wall and Kristin Platt of Houston and Brett Haynes and Mariela Platt from Los Angeles, California. Additionally, seven grandchildren survive him.
