George Lyles Passes Away
On Saturday, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture opened its doors. A special exhibit chronicles Lyles Station – a free black pioneer community that emerged more than 200 years ago in Gibson County – through artifacts gathered during excavation.
Mayor Vi Lyles of Charlotte, North Carolina, visited the display and expressed her pride that their community’s history had been given such national exposure.
Early Life and Education
George Lyle, now a Member of the Order of the British Empire, began his professional golf career at Hawkstone Park in England as a pro. At age 17, he won the English Amateur Stroke Play Championship.
His first professional win came in 1979 and he went on to win 18 European Tour titles. Additionally, he earned the Order of Merit in 1980.
He was a member of the winning Ryder Cup team in 1987.
After his military service, Lyles returned to college and earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee. Eventually, he earned a master’s in secondary education as well. Since then, he has held multiple roles as both teacher and principal; teaching social studies, science, and English language arts (ELA) in both urban and alternative settings.
Professional Career
George Lyles, 58 of Ozark passed away in Little Rock on December 29th 2019. Survived by his daughters Tara Lyles from Ozark and Stasha Coyle of Gaffney; father Virgil Lyles Sr. from Fort Smith; one brother Virgil Lyles Jr. also of Fort Smith; as well as seven grandchildren.
George Lyles was an attorney with extensive professional experience in Commercial Litigation, Insurance Defense, Intellectual Property Disputes, Real Estate Transactions and Employment Law. Additionally, he served as Deputy General Counsel for the District of Columbia Child and Family Services Agency where he helped launch a new foster care agency through federal court receivership.
He was the first chair of Prince George’s County’s Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, setting an example that has since been replicated across other jurisdictions nationwide. Their most significant success was uncovering the most successful human trafficking case in the county’s history.

George Lyles is an accomplished professional with numerous awards, honors and accolades to his name. As a former Air Force general and vice chief of staff, he has served on various councils related to space activities, national security matters and intelligence gathering.
He’s served on numerous committees and advisory boards, such as the NASA Advisory Council and Augustine Space Committee. Furthermore, he provides advice to national security and intelligence organizations.
Lyles is an inspiring leader with a strong work ethic and focus on people. Throughout his career, he’s made it his priority to put others before himself and ensure his employees receive excellent treatment and satisfaction at work.
Personal Life
George Lyles was an influential figure during his lifetime, serving on numerous boards such as USAA. Additionally, he founded and chaired General Dynamics Corporation – a leader in the defense industry – which remains active today.
In addition to his military service, Lyles was also instrumental in the founding of Alpha Phi Alpha sorority. This organization was inspired by Ethel Hedgeman and formed due to Lyles’ involvement with the fraternity.
After serving in the Air Force, Lyles was asked to lead their ballistic missile defense organization at the Pentagon. Despite only being a junior officer at that time, his leadership in this field made an impact on military operations and helped shape aerospace technology – earning him one of WashingtonExec’s virtual 2020 Pinnacle Awards for his contributions in this area.
