One month after leaving the federal Department of Homeland Security, Jesse Carter has been hired as Senior Vice President of Programs at the Anti-Defamation League. In this role, he will direct their educational, law enforcement and community security initiatives.
Early Life and Education
Early childhood education is an integral component of a child’s development. It helps them hone social, emotional and cognitive abilities that will enable them to succeed academically and throughout life.
Education provides the foundations for educational success, economic productivity, responsible citizenship, lifelong health and strong communities. To realize these advantages requires a commitment to early childhood education with an emphasis on high-quality preschool and pre-K programs.
Even as political divisions deepen, support for early childhood education remains strong among American voters. A 2017 First Five Years Fund poll revealed that 89% of Trump voters and 79% of Clinton supporters want Congress and the administration to improve pre-K and make it more affordable for parents.
Professional Career
Selim has extensive professional experience, having focused on security and human rights matters. In 2004, he joined the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a senior policy advisor with the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.
Selim was instrumental in fighting violent extremism during his tenure with DHS. He spearheaded their locally-based Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) programs and was appointed to head up the federal CVE Task Force.
He is now Senior Vice President of Programs at the Anti-Defamation League, leading their educational, law enforcement and community security initiatives. Additionally, he directs ADL’s Center on Extremism.

On Monday, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) announced that they have appointed him to head up their programs on law enforcement, education, and community security. His impressive list of awards and recognition includes being named for one of the most prestigious awards in this field by DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson. One major accomplishment during Selim’s tenure as Director was creating a national model of community-based security that has since become widely emulated across other organizations.
Personal Life
George Selim, a Muslim American of Egyptian and Lebanese descent, worked closely with organized Muslim communities as the Director of Community Partnerships at the Department of Homeland Security. Additionally, he led a countering violent extremism task force that coordinated these efforts across government agencies.
Selim was a veteran of the Bush, Obama and Trump administrations and one of few federal officials to recognize the value of working with mainstream American Muslims to combat terrorism. Unfortunately, he resigned in July due to budget cuts and partisanship.
Now, he is leading programs on law enforcement, education and community security for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), one of a few national Jewish organizations that collaborates with Muslim and other religious groups on security concerns.
