Early Life and Education
In their early years of life, children acquire a great deal about themselves and the world around them from their parents. This understanding is often passed along to them through example or role modeling from adults.
However, for healthy development, children also require active stimulation and interaction with others. Early childhood education is an integral part of a child’s life, and it has the potential to shape their educational trajectory.
The United Nations (UN) has set several goals for early childhood education, such as guaranteeing all girls and boys access to quality early care and instruction so they are prepared for primary school.
According to UNESCO, children go through three key stages in their cognitive development. The first is sensorimotor, which occurs from birth until 2 years old and allows children to gain an understanding of the world through sensory experiences. This stage is essential for rapid growth. The second is preoperational, which occurs from 2-7 years old and allows both rational and non-rational thought development.
