George Wolverton was the editor and publisher of the Business Times, a dedicated family man and sports enthusiast.
He served in both North Fork Ambulance Service and Hotchkiss Volunteer Fire Department, serving as EMT for more than two decades. To many in his community, he was an inspiration and hero.
Early Life and Education
George Wolverton was born in Camden, NJ on April 25, 1882 to Charles S. Wolverton – a prominent local entrepreneur who served 16 terms in the United States House of Representatives.
As a teenager, he attended Camden High School and was part of the basketball team. After graduating with an engineering degree from New Jersey College of Technology, he went on to work as a mechanical engineer for the State Highway Department in Camden.
In addition to his distinguished career in education, he was an ardent community volunteer who dedicated numerous hours towards charitable causes. He was the founding member of the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce and served on its board of directors for several years; he was also active at Morton Memorial United Methodist Church and Graceland Baptist Church. Additionally, he enjoyed reading voraciously; even contributing articles to several publications.

George Wolverton was an American football player who represented Sheffield United in the Football League.
George Wolverton played for a club that consistently finished in the top division for several years. Their success could not have been achieved without its forward players, one of whom being George.
He had started to make a name for himself by scoring goals, and it was in a game against Leeds that he scored his first goal of the season. An outstanding player, he made an invaluable contribution to his team.
He was an impressive goal scorer and his goals helped the team climb into the division. In the final games of the season he had an immense impact, scoring 4 goals and setting up several others. It’s no wonder why he became such a popular figure among teammates and fans alike – his fans knew him by name!
Achievements and Honors
George Wolverton was an accomplished lawyer and served in the New Jersey State Assembly from 1915 to 1918.
He was a Republican.
In June 1940, he introduced legislation to have the Civil Service Commission and federal departments investigated for improperly assigning civilian job quotas to states. This measure enjoyed support from several influential South Jersey politicians such as State Senate President David Baird and Governor Morgan Larson, both Republicans.
He served as an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention from New Jersey in 1920 and served as attorney for Camden, New Jersey. A member of Freemasons, Knights Templar, Shriners, Elks and Rotary Club, he became a renowned public speaker before passing away on May 16, 1969 at age 83.
Personal Life
George Wolverton was a successful businessman and hero to his nation. For his bravery in service, he was awarded both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
He served on the Camden City Commission and as Highway Department Head for the city. Additionally, he was a member of the American Legion.
Today, many distinguished citizens, officials and veterans paid their respects at the funeral. These included Congressman Charles A. Wolverton, former Assemblyman Rocco Palese, Freeholder Maurice Bart and wife, County Detective James Mulligan, Deputy City Clerk William D. Sayrs, City Clerk Reesman and many more.
Sharon Lee (Wolverton) Sutherland of Bangor, Maine and Santa Rosa Beach, Florida passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Mercy Hospital in Portland, ME on September 2, 2017. She is survived by her husband George; son Jeffrey; sister Ruth Brown; brother Harry James Wolverton; many dear friends; as well as her beloved canine companion Maggie.
