Henry Lyon once led one of the nation’s largest black religious conventions and lived an extravagant lifestyle – until his wife tragically burned down their $700,000 waterfront home near St. Petersburg.
New Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Temple Terrace voted to oust Lyons after trustees and deacons discovered evidence of misappropriation of funds.
Early Life and Education
Henry Lyon was born on Meat Market Lane in Cork City, Ireland to Henry Lyon a clerk and Catherine O’Keeffe O’Keeffe O’Keeffe O’Keeffe O’Keeffe O’Keeffe who both shared the responsibility for raising their four sons.
His warmth, generosity and effortless lack of pretension earned him immense respect and trust throughout his career and life. Additionally, his sharp intellect was evident at every turn.
He was one of the founding members of the Massachusetts Moderators Association and also held memberships in the American, Boston, Massachusetts and Virginia Bar Associations as well as National Association of Bond Lawyers. Additionally, he was a trustee for both Massachusetts Charitable Society and Massachusetts Taxpayer Foundation.
Lyon of Paris Hill took an indirect path to fame as navigator on Charles Kingsford Smith’s first trans-Pacific airplane flight in 1928 from Oakland, California, to Brisbane, Australia. This flight started and ended in Oakland.
Professional Career
Henry Lyon has long been involved with Christian Science Churches. Throughout his lifetime he has held various positions within them such as First Reader, board member and Sunday School teacher. Additionally he managed the Clerk’s Office for The Mother Church of Christ Scientist.
He began his career at Lyon Aviation as a flight instructor before progressing to become a Navajo, Learjet and Gulfstream pilot – eventually also serving as director of safety and assistant chief pilot.
Amandine Henry is a professional French footballer currently playing for club Lyon. She has participated in three consecutive seasons of the UEFA Women’s Champions League as well as representing France at 2019 World Cup competition, garnering numerous awards and recognition due to her on-field success.
Achievement and Honors
He was an honorary member of the George Washington Law Review, Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society and Order of the Coif, as well as being a life member of both American Bar Association and Virginia State Bar Association.
He helped reduce debt at the Baptist World Center and disband some unneeded government offices, and worked to increase army officer pay and reform the school of cadets.
He recently inked a contract with Los Angeles-based Angel City FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, joining French star Amandine Henry who left Lyon this summer due to their disagreement over head coach Corinne Diacre; both have long histories together.
Personal Life
Lyon and radioman friend James Warner offered their services as pilot and navigator during Charles Kingsford Smith’s attempt to fly across the Pacific Ocean. On their arrival to Oakland, California they were met by 15,000 enthusiastic supporters, who welcomed them enthusiastically with cheers of applause.
Emma Lyon Young published Miscellaneous Poems in 1812. Together with Henry Lyon Young, she studied acting with Michael Chekhov at Dartington Hall in England.
Y-DNA testing has demonstrated the close familial ties between Richard Lyon and Henry Lyon and William Lyon of Roxbury – for which there has never been solid proof – and William Lyon from Roxbury. Furthermore, Thomas Lyon from Rye could not possibly be their father as had been suggested previously and neither man was born in Glen Lyon Scotland as had been suggested previously.
