Henry Nwajagu – Oklahoma City Police Officer Accused of Killing Lauren Smeltz, 28

Henry Nwajagu made an immediate impactful impression upon walking onto the Fairfield University campus with his unique character and passions evidently present. While at school, Nwajagu engaged in many activities and worked tirelessly towards realizing his dreams; writing, directing and producing movies while participating in a production company that supported emerging actors was among his many endeavors.

On January 4th near Ada, Nwajagu was driving east on State Highway 3 when he hit Lauren Smeltz head-on as she traveled towards her final obstetrics and gynecology (OB) appointment. Smeltz, 28, was nine months pregnant at the time.

Nwajagu has been charged with both first-degree manslaughter and negligent homicide; KXII reports his bail has been set at $75,000; GoFundMe has also been established to raise funds for Smeltz’s family; to date it has raised over $18,000.

Professional Career

Henry Nwajagu is an Oklahoma City police officer. On State Highway 3 near Ada in January, while driving his pickup truck across the centerline and striking another vehicle head-on he crossed, Nwajagu crossed into Lauren Smeltz’s path heading to her last obstetrics and gynecology (OB) appointment for her eight month pregnancy; Lauren later passed away later at hospital due to the impact. Nwajagu has been charged with manslaughter and negligent homicide; currently, desk duty while investigations continue.

Personal Life

Nwajagu caused a fatal car accident that resulted in the death of 28-year-old pregnant Ada resident Rachelle Smeltz when his vehicle drove left of center and hit Smeltz’s pickup truck head-on, according to Oklahoma Highway Patrol records. She was eight months pregnant at the time, heading toward her last obstetrics and gynecology (OB) appointment when it happened.

Pontotoc County District Court charged Nwajagu with first-degree manslaughter and negligent homicide, issuing an arrest warrant against him.

Nwajagu is married with four children and co-owns the Black Forest Cobra Zoo, home to over 100 species including several rare and endangered ones.
