In 1867 he purchased the native reserve at Waipukurau called Pa Flat and laid out its village, leasing town sections at reduced rental costs over 99 years and building cottages to house “one of every trade needed”, all under his auspices to create a compact little community under his care.

On their wedding day in North Carolina they had seven children together.
