Rolovich took time off in 2021 in protest of Washington State’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate for employees, and filed a suit alleging religious discrimination.
Early Life and Education
Rolovich hails from Novato, California and attended Marin Catholic High School where he earned varsity letters in both football and baseball – being chosen as starting quarterback during his senior season and leading them to victory at league championship.
Early in 2001, he replaced Timmy Chang as Hawaii Warriors starting quarterback, leading them to an 8-1 record and throwing for 3,361 yards and 34 touchdowns during his collegiate career while setting 19 school passing records and eight total offense records.
Rolovich made clear in his statement that Chun threatened him with termination if he did not grant a religious exemption from WSU’s vaccine requirement. Brian Fahling from Kenmore indicated his plans to file suit alleging discrimination based on religious beliefs against WSU.
Professional Career
Rolovich excelled as both a passer and receiver at Hawaii during his two years there from 2000-01, starting most of 2001’s campaign and totaling 4,176 passing yards and 40 touchdowns for an outstanding 41-7 record threw with 6 school passing records still standing today.
After his playing career was complete, Rolovich went on to coach at San Marin High School and the University of Hawaii before rejoining June Jones, his college coach there, to coach their Run-and-Shoot offense for four seasons before leaving to accept a position with Montana State in November.
Rolovich holds both a bachelor’s in economics from Hawaii and master’s degrees in human performance and sport from New Mexico Highlands. Born and raised in Novato, California with wife Analea as their family caregivers; Daniel William Patrick live together now in Bozeman Montana.
Achievement and Honors
Rolovich led Hawaii to an overall 28-27 record during his four years at the helm, including three bowl appearances and its inaugural Mountain West Championship Game victory.
He was also an excellent teacher and mentor to many of his players, such as Tim Chang (two-time Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year) and Kainoa Akina (current backup quarterback). Both earned All-Mountain West and Pac-12 honors thanks to him.
His firing came as a shock, especially with the Cougars at 5-6 on the season. But upon leaving paradise, he did not badmouth either the program or its predecessors; rather he simply stated he was seeking opportunities elsewhere and hopes to return as coach in time.
