Jacob Thoman currently works with Gibney Company as an artist, having collaborated with such choreographers as Ohad Naharin, Crystal Pite, and Aszure Barton. Additionally, he won a 2022 Princess Grace Award in Dance from that organization as well as being awarded their Moving Toward Justice Fellowship award.

Jacob and Susanna Thoman led long lives, passing down their legacy to their descendants around the globe.

Early Life and Education

Jacob Thoman was born and raised in Austin, Texas where he worked odd jobs at his family’s small print shop. Later enrolled at University of Texas Dallas to earn his Bachelor’s in Psychology degree.

Jacob and Susanna remained active members of their church community and raised a family on their farm. Both died in 1805, and are both interred at Bair’s Meetinghouse near York Road near their farm; unfortunately, over time their gravestones have become worn away due to weathering.

Jacob trained both in Cincinnati, Ohio and Manila, Philippines at the School for Creative and Performing Arts, The School of Dance at Cincinnati Ballet, Exhale Dance Tribe under Missy Lay Zimmer and Andrew Hubbard before graduating from The Juilliard School in 2019. As an Artistic Associate of Gibney Company he has performed works by Roy Assaf, Crystal Pite, Stefanie Batten Bland.

Professional Career

Thoman spent their childhood between Cincinnati, Ohio and Manila, Philippines where they attended The School for Creative and Performing Arts of Cincinnati Ballet and Performing Arts and Exhale Dance Tribe led by Missy Lay Zimmer and Andrew Hubbard. Graduating from Juilliard School under Larry Rhodes and Alicia Graf Mack in 2019, they have performed and collaborated creatively with choreographers such as Crystal Pite, Roy Assaf, Stephanie Batten Bland as well as being involved with productions like Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise at The Shed and Winter Guests created by Alan Lucien Oyen among many other projects.

Jacob is an LGBTQ Filipino performing artist on a mission to uncover their authentic, empathic voice. A recipient of the Princess Grace Award in Dance in 2022, Jacob co-choreographs and restages Jose Limon works at MOVE|NYC|. Additionally, EVERGREEN empowers LGBTQ+ youth by providing them a space where they feel safe to express themselves freely and safely.

Achievement and Honors

Jacob Thoman (he/they) is an Artistic Associate for Gibney Company and graduate of The Juilliard School, studying with Larry Rhodes and Alicia Graf Mack. They have performed works by Roy Assaf, Crystal Pite and Stephanie Batten Bland among many others; additionally Thoman has performed for other dance companies such as The Shed and Asian American Arts Center.

RTE was the sponsor for Jacob’s Awards until 1989 when commercial radio broke their monopoly in sound broadcasting. Hilton Edwards served as compere at these events and winners were typically presented their award by a senior member of Irish government, most often the Taoiseach himself. Unfortunately, no explanation for why these awards ceased taking place can be provided; their last ceremony took place in 1993 but their exact cause of demise remains unknown.

Personal Life

Jacob and Susanna left behind numerous descendants, both celebrated and less so, that have left legacies for future generations. Their story serves as a powerful testament to perseverance and education as forces that create lasting legacies.

At age 79, Jacob drafted and dictated his last will and testament in July 1803. It included specific provisions for his wife as well as an outline of how his estate was to be dispersed. Jacob was laid to rest near York Road at Bair’s Meetinghouse a short distance from where he resided.

In 2019, he joined Gibney Company as an Artistic Associate under the direction of Larry Rhodes and Alicia Graf Mack, performing works by Roy Assaf, Crystal Pite and Stefanie Batten Bland. Additionally, he founded Moving Forward Dallas; an organization which nurtures promising young artists in Dallas.
