Professional Career

Jaivian Thomas is a California Golden Bears running back who currently wears number 21. Hailing from McClymonds high school in Bay Area, where he won 2022 Oakland Metro Player of Year honors he helped lead his team to Division 2-AA state title game with 2,528 yards rushed and 30 touchdowns scored en route.

He was selected in the second round of the 1988 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills and played seven seasons there, amassing over 2,000 yards rushing and 100 touchdowns over that time.

At Cal, he becomes the ninth player and first running back to commit for their 2023 class, joining an already impressive backfield which already includes All-Pac-12 selection Jaydn Ott. Additionally, he competes as a track athlete competing in long jump events.

Achievement and Honors

Thomas ran for over 2,550 yards and 30 touchdowns this season as McClymonds reached the CIF State 2-AA title game. Thomas earned honor roll student status while also being recognized with both Cal-Hi Sports NorCal Player of the Year and Oakland Athletic League MVP honors.

Thomas has performed admirably throughout training camp despite Byron Cardwell’s injury, with Ashton Stredick and Isaiah Ifanse providing stiff competition for backup duties while Thomas should provide depth at running back.

Thomas announced his commitment to Cal on Tuesday night after months of forming relationships with its coaching staff. The 3-star recruit chose Cal over Rice, San Jose State and Sacramento State and will play an instrumental role in their offense this fall.

Personal Life

Thomas is an honor roll student at McClymonds High School who also plays basketball for them. An all-around great athlete, Thomas was recognized with numerous honors including Cal-Hi Sports North Coast Section Player of the Year honors; Oakland Athletic League MVP award; San Francisco Chronicle All Metro Player Award honor; as well as signing his letter of intent with Cal for football play this season (wearing No 21 on McClymonds and signing to play football at Cal).
