On October 1725, John Dunstable was born in Clerkenwell, London to a malt distiller’s son. He entered Lincoln’s Inn in 1742 and then continued his education for two years at the University of Leiden.

In 1747 he wed the daughter of a Buckinghamshire squire and received her dowry–the manor of Aylesbury–which cemented his status as a landed gentleman.

He joined the secret society known as “Monks of Medmenham.” This group met at Medmenham Abbey, Buckinghamshire to indulge in debauchery and perform Black Masses.

He was elected Member of Parliament for Aylesbury in 1757 and quickly gained notoriety as an outspoken opponent of Lord Bute, King George III’s favorite. Accused of seditious libel, he spent time in the Tower of London.
