Early Life and Education

Early life is critical for human potential and health; physical wellbeing, psychiatric conditions, cognitive/executive functions, social/cognitive functioning, lifestyle choices and socioeconomic outcomes all play a role. A complex interplay of adverse conditions, protective factors, genetic influences, epigenetic influences, environmental exposures and social policy all influence these outcomes.
Research should take a social ecological perspective to examine the complex interactions among adverse conditions, protective factors and other contextual stressors that influence child development. Such studies could inform preventive measures, therapeutic interventions, advocacy efforts, social policy changes and public awareness campaigns to address early life adversities and their long-term effects on subsequent generations.
