Early Life and Education
Carvell’s father was a labourer. His mother died when he was nine years old.
He attended McKinley Grade School, Quincy Junior High and Topeka High. He also went to night school.
After graduating from college, he married Ethel Louise Woodson and they raised their two children in Topeka, Kansas. They lived in integrated neighborhoods.
His son Maurice, who was born in 1932, grew up in a segregated school until he entered Topeka High. He subsequently completed his studies at Washburn University.
He was the first to use a soft-serve ice cream machine and developed the secret formula for his company. He also invented a line of ice cream cakes with animal designs, such as “Fudgie the Whale” and “Cookie Puss.”

These certificates allowed them to escape from the camp and travel to Palestine in 1937.

John Carvell is one of those rare individuals who aren’t just the best at what they do, but also a pleasure to be around. Having lived in Marlow for over a decade, Carvell is well known locally as the founder of Carvells Newsagents and Grocers, both located in Station Road.
He recently moved to Monterey County, California in order to enjoy the outdoors and more open space that this area has to offer. He says he’s not a “horsey person” but he loves the openness and more rural setting that Carmel Valley has to offer.
