John Cerqueira, 22, Was a Roommate on the Day of the 9/11 Attacks
John Cerqueira has been awarded $400,000 after a jury found that American Airlines violated his civil rights. The company removed him from a flight in 2003 along with two Israeli men.
After he was cleared by state police, American Airlines refused to rebook him. In a case that’s become the first airline-racial profiling lawsuit since 9/11, the court ruled that the airline based its decision on racial suspicion without a valid reason.
Early Life and Education
Fresh out of North Carolina State at age 22 and living with a roommate in a converted one-bedroom on the Upper East Side, Cerqueira was working for a New York City telecoms firm. During his time at NC State, Cerqueira was able to use his experience at the World Trade Center to teach students about what it takes to become a hero. That’s why he was one of several speakers at the NC State Crafts Center’s “Art of Remembrance” on Saturday, which commemorated the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
