John Chemers is a professor of organizational psychology. He has an international reputation for his research and teaching on cross-cultural leadership effectiveness.
Under Title VII, it is unlawful for an employer to discriminate against any individual with respect to compensation, terms, conditions or privileges of employment on the basis of religion. In this case, Chemers alleges he was terminated based on his religion.
Professional Career
John chemers was a senior postdoctoral scientist in the life sciences at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. As a result of his work, he received an award from the Institute for Science and Health Policy at Mount Sinai that is named after him. During his tenure, he also helped establish the Robin Chemers Neustein Postdoctoral Fellowship at the School of Medicine. The fellowship is intended to encourage women in the sciences and provide them with resources for research training and career development. Several of the program’s graduates are now professors at universities across the country. The fellowship also includes four-hour workshops on professional development topics such as science ethics, stress reduction, and diversity in science careers.
Achievements and Honors
During his eight years as dean of the Division of Social Sciences and 15 months as interim campus provost/executive vice chancellor and acting chancellor, Chemers was a tireless champion of research. He developed a small-grants program that helped boost the careers of many professors. He also established a new award to honor outstanding research in the social sciences.
As Acting Chancellor, Chemers strove to listen to UCSC’s wide range of constituencies – from neighbors worried about traffic to undergraduates who were opposed to the university’s plans to expand in Silicon Valley. He was guided by his commitment to the common good. As he left his acting leadership role, Chemers said he wished he could have been more involved in shaping UCSC’s future. He will continue to pursue his research on cross-cultural and social-psychological aspects of leadership.
Personal Life
john chemers has been in the automotive industry for over 30 years. He has worked at multiple dealerships and has been promoted to several management positions. He has also served on a number of committees and boards. He has many friends and is a proud member of his church. His favorite pastime is reading and playing the piano. He lives in the Lockport area of IL with his wife and children. He is a loyal car enthusiast and has a collection of classic cars. He has several hobbies and interests that he likes to share with his friends. He is a great husband and father and loves spending time with his kids.
