John Cobian is an expert in water resources management and a member of NASA Applied Sciences program. He has made significant contributions to flood monitoring, damage assessment, drought forecasting and mitigation strategies.
He holds a PhD in geology with an emphasis on hydrology and remote sensing from the University of South Carolina, has served on numerous committees related to water resources, and is actively engaged in international research projects.
Early Life and Education
Born in Aberdeen, Washington to mechanic Donald Leland Cobain and Wendy Elizabeth Fradenburg, Cobain experienced a difficult childhood. His parents divorced when he was nine; this compounded the trauma of growing up without parental guidance or guidance.
Cobain had great artistic abilities as a child and an intense interest in music. As a teenager, he started playing in local rock bands before joining The Melvins as lead guitarist.
He founded Nirvana with Krist Novoselic in 1987, and they quickly achieved prominence within Seattle’s grunge scene. Their angst-ridden songwriting showcased a combination of grunge and pop sensibilities. Their breakthrough hit single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” revolutionized popular rock music; it helped define “grunge” as a genre and inspired an entire movement that has since gained global traction through MTV, Rolling Stone magazine and global radio stations alike.

Cobian Footwear is a family-run sandal company with strong influences from California beach life. Established in 1995, this San Marcos-based business continues to evolve while still producing reliable and comfortable sandals.
Sandals of Bethany Hamilton Foundation, Surfers Not Street Children and Christian Surfers have joined forces in support of humanitarianism through their Every Step Matters campaign.
The company boasts a 25,000 square foot headquarters in Vista and an additional 17,000 square feet warehousing and distribution center. Its products range from men’s, women’s and children’s sandals – many designed by in-house. Furthermore, there is a dedicated team of designers and sales representatives.
Achievements and Honors
In 1993, John Cobian left Flojos and co-founded Cobian Corporation with his sister Claudia. With a vision of providing high quality sandals at reasonable prices that reflected his faith-based background, John set out to create an enterprise that would reflect these principles.
CAPT Cobian is an accomplished Navy officer. He has served as Auxiliary and Electrical Officer on USS Fort Fisher (LSD 40), Main Propulsion Assistant and Fire Control Officer aboard USS Princeton (CG 59), Weapons Officer/Combat Systems Officer aboard USS Stethem (DDG 63) and Executive Officer/Commander of Destroyer Squadron 21.
He earned the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and numerous campaign and unit awards during his sea tours. Presently he works as a Senior Research Scientist with NASA’s Applied Sciences Program on global water resources management and climate change issues.
Personal Life
Cobain’s life was complicated despite his success as a musician. He was born in Aberdeen, Washington into an unstable family and struggled to focus in school while taking Ritalin for sleep at night. Despite these troubles, Cobain continued his music career despite great success.
At the age of fourteen, Cobain’s parents divorced and he moved in with his dad. Unfortunately, his mother, who prioritized her new husband and children over Cobain, did not encourage his musical ambitions.
After Frances Bean was born, he turned to drugs. He overdosed on Rohypnol and champagne in 1994, leading to his own death two years later in 1994.
