Barebow Archer – John Dammer III

John Demmer III, barebow archer and multi-time national and world champion, is an example of the fierce competitiveness that barebow shooting can bring. He has faced countless stressful situations during his barebow career, including the Vegas Shoot, The Lancaster Classic, IBO Championships and more.

A Michigan State University alumnus, Dammer is an avid supporter of the Spartans and their athletic programs. He and his wife, Marnie, are major benefactors to MSU.

Early Life and Education

John Dammer was born on May 9, 1925 near Little Rock, Iowa. He attended country school south of Rushmore, Minnesota and married Helen Harberts in 1944.

He was a proud WW II veteran. He served in Germany until the war ended.

Upon his discharge from the Army, Dahmer lived with his grandmother in Wisconsin. He continued to drink, and was arrested for indecent exposure in 1986.

His grandmother was tired of his late nights and drinking, and she moved him out of the house in 1988.

Between 1978 and 1991, he murdered 17 men. He was meticulous in choosing his victims, luring them with promises of money and sex before killing them.

Professional Career

Throughout his military career, Dammer served in the infantry and spent a lot of time on the road. He learned to drive trucks, which was a dangerous job because they were often targeted by grenade attacks.

The best part about driving a truck was that it was free, a luxury that wasn’t afforded to many soldiers during World War II. In addition to his driving skills, Dammer excelled at playing the accordion – an instrument that uses bellows and buttons to play a song a few notes at a time.

Eventually, Dammer decided that two instruments wasn’t enough and purchased a concertina – another free reed musical instrument that plays a single note at a time. His new found love is a far cry from his old life as a truck driver and he plans to continue to learn the latest and greatest in musical gadgets.

Achievements and Honors

Besides his business accomplishments, Demmer is also a proud philanthropist and avid Spartan fan. A generous donor to Michigan State University, he and Marnie have funded the John and Marnie Demmer Shooting Sports and Education Facility on the MSU campus. Among other things, it features the country’s first commercial indoor archery range.

A devoted family man and avid fan of the game, he’s also an e-sports enthusiast who keeps score on his computer and on the go. He’s a diehard Spartan fan and has hosted catered tailgate parties outside Spartan Stadium on many an occasion. A plethora of award-winning wines are stocked in his cellar and he’s got an impressive trophy case full of MSU gear. It’s no wonder he has earned the respect of so many peers.

Personal Life

John Dammer is a proud World War II veteran. He served as a tank commander in Germany during the war and had many memorable experiences in that time.

His family and friends remember him as an energetic and enthusiastic person who loved to travel. He and his wife, Marnie, had a number of trips together and were especially fond of their annual family vacations to the BWCA in Northern Minnesota.

He also enjoyed playing his accordion for family, neighbors and anyone who liked polka music. He was also very passionate about supporting MSU and its football program and donated the initial funds for the Demmer Shooting Sports, Education and Training Center on campus.

He was a very special man who lived life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife and family.
