Growing up in Buffalo, John would listen to a radio show called Free Form Sports hosted by Stan Barron. This five-hour show covered any sport imaginable and featured guest athletes each week.
Now, he works in harness racing and believes it has potential to be a huge success. When not watching races, he works in sales and spends time with his children.
Early Life and Education
John Furgele’s proudest accomplishment was his leadership of the Brandywine School District, where he served as superintendent for 10 years. It was an honor and testament to his unflagging commitment to student success. John went above and beyond his duty in order to make the school district a better place for teachers and learners alike. Through wise administrative decisions, his district has grown from an underfunded and overcrowded mess into a national model for academic excellence and community involvement.
John Furgele may not have earned the title of resident expert for the family, but he was an admired member of his community and will be remembered for both his kindness and contributions to public education.
Professional Career
John Furgele is a puck-moving blueliner who has played for four ECHL teams, including the Maine Mariners and Atlanta Gladiators. In 92 games with those teams, John has scored 10 goals and added 21 assists while accruing 106 PIMs throughout his career.
Born and raised in Glen Mills, PA, Furgele attended the University of New Hampshire from 2014-16 where he earned Hockey East All-Academic recognition both as a freshman and sophomore.
He then transferred to Quinnipiac University, where he served as assistant captain and scored 14 points in 38 games last season.
In his first professional season, he has scored 21 points (8g, 13a) in 51 games for the Maine Mariners. In February he was traded to Atlanta Gladiators in exchange for forward Branden Troock.

As host, Barron featured all types of high school and college sports from field hockey to football and even basketball on his program; oftentimes John would turn on the radio just to hear about what was going on with their favorite team or to catch up on day’s scores.
Furgele was an accomplished college athlete and then went on to be a highly esteemed school superintendent. With 39 years in public education under his belt, Furgele earned himself the nicknames “Doc” to some and “Daddy” to others. A pioneer in his fields, he guided his school districts through many revolutionary changes such as desegregation. He will always remain fondly remembered by those in his community.
Personal Life
Furgele, affectionately known to many as Doc or Dad, was an esteemed educator who worked with children throughout his career. He served as superintendent of New Castle School District in Delaware before being promoted to head of Brandywine School District where he remained for 10 years. Throughout this time in the classroom, Furgele helped students achieve success and learn from mistakes alike.
Outside the classroom, he was also a family man who enjoyed spending time with his wife and two sons. An avid fan of both horse and harness racing, he enjoyed attending races to witness its development over time. Nowadays, he resides in Delmar, NY with his family and loves collecting money to spend on his favorite sports activities.

Additionally, he served as director on the board for non-profit organization ASIFA-Hollywood and his fortune is expected to increase over time as he builds upon his business ventures.
