John Gudger was born in Waynesville, North Carolina on August 10, 1866. His ancestors were some of the earliest settlers west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
As a child, he devoured children’s books and developed an interest in nature and science. Ultimately, he attended college to study natural history and anthropology.
He was also a dedicated volunteer fireman for many years, active in his community and serving on numerous committees and boards.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, was an expert gardener with his Koi pond, and relished spending time with family and friends. Most importantly, he had a generous spirit – which will be missed by those close to him.
Professional Career
John Gudger’s professional career began in the early 1920s. He established an architectural practice in Asheville and primarily served clients from Western North Carolina.
He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and active in civic and cultural activities. An officer of the Kiwanis Club, Asheville and Biltmore Forest country clubs, Trinity Episcopal Church, and American Artists Professional League were some of his affiliations.
He was an accomplished architect of both public and private buildings, particularly schools. Additionally, he designed the Asheville City Auditorium which was constructed with WPA assistance in 1939.

Gudger made history during his freshman season as part of Georgetown University’s most prolific offense ever. He finished the year with 1,286 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns, making him the first player ever to receive the prestigious Rookie of the Year award in school history.
Footballers renowned him for his running ability and willingness to catch passes. But he’s equally renowned for his special teams work; he was named FedEx Ground FCS National Freshman of the Week following his 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Penn. Additionally, he ranked among top three players nationwide in kickoff returns for yards and scores.
Personal Life
John Gudger enjoys spending time with his wife and son when he’s not playing soccer. In his free time, he enjoys reading, playing poker and gardening.
