John Mattoon was born on January 30th 1934 in Mattoon, Illinois and attended Champaign High School before earning both his bachelor’s degree and juris doctorate from the University of Illinois.

He was a lawyer specializing in estates, drainage and mineral rights. Additionally, he enjoyed hiking and traveling abroad.

On September 5, 2022 in Mattoon, Iowa, he passed away at 88 years old. Survived by his wife Carol and predeceased by his parents, he was an active member in several civic organizations, loved reading books and sports, enjoyed traveling, and spending time with family. The family is deeply saddened by all the love and support they received during this difficult time from friends, relatives, and community members alike.

Professional Career

John is a partner in KPMG’s Chicago office and an audit managing director. His expertise lies in auditing investment management and financial services companies.

He is an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Mattoon and serves on its board of directors. Additionally, he supports Kiwanis International’s humanitarian work around the world.

The Mattoon Kiwanis Club recently purchased playground equipment for Cunningham Park. According to Brian Daniell, immediate past-president of the club, they sought someone with professional playground assembly experience who could oversee installation of the equipment.

In recent years, the Mattoon Kiwanis Club has raised money to support local programs for children and Kiwanis International’s international humanitarian work. Furthermore, it has sponsored playground construction at Lawson and Peterson parks.

Achievements and Honors

John Mattoon is an esteemed veterinarian who has earned numerous accolades and recognition for his accomplishments. A member of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR), he recently received their Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award during their annual conference.

Mattoon has been an ardent butterfly enthusiast since 1950 and has dedicated much of his professional career to studying Northern California’s butterflies and moths. Through his research, he has made a significant contribution to our understanding of these winged wonders and their diminishing habitats.

At a noon meeting held on May 16, the Kiwanis Club of Mattoon awarded scholarships to three Mattoon High School students: Mikayla Prevo ($1,000), Madison Freeman ($500) and Sam Kettleson ($500).

Personal Life

John Mattoon’s personal life is filled with many accomplishments and contributions. He has been active in numerous veterinary professional organizations, worked as a small animal specialist in Portland, Oregon before embarking on his radiology residency and teaching career at Oregon State University.

His career has earned him many accolades and honors, such as serving as Chief Radiologist for Antech Imaging Services from 2014-2016. Additionally, he was a professor at Washington State University from 2013 until present where he currently holds the title of Clinical Professor with responsibility for resident and student training programs.

His community has been an integral part of his life for decades, and his legacy will endure long into the future. Survived by his wife Gerry, five children; John Alan Staszak, Cindy Staszak, Kathleen Breen with husband Jeff, Sandy Staszak with husband Howard Hunt, Karen Rose with husband Tom, sister Martha Kowaleski; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren – John Alan Staszak will always remain in our hearts.
