John Neer – A Poet and an MMA Fighter

John Neer was a Naval officer who served as Chief of the Boat for a large part of his service career. He was a person who made his shipmates feel welcome, and who took time to help them.

He was an avid painter who painted scenes ranging from night landscapes to winter scenes. He also raised mules, cattle and poultry on his farm.

Early Life and Education

John Neer grew up on a farm in Loudoun County, Virginia. A steadfast work ethic and the importance of helping his family led to a career in the United States Navy, where he rose quickly in rank.

He served as the Chief of the Boat (COB) for a large part of his sea duty, training reliefs and ensuring that all Sailors were treated with dignity and respect. This is a trait that has carried over to his career as a coach.

As a coach, Neer’s principal tenet is that success shouldn’t be measured solely by wins and losses, but rather by the level of character he instills in his players. Those who have been associated with him throughout his career at Rochester appreciate that he is not only a successful coach but also an excellent person.

Professional Career

John Neer has been a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter since 2003. He has fought in a number of promotions and gained victories over some of the top lightweights in the world.

He made his UFC debut in 2005 and has gone 2-1. He won by submission over Melvin Guillard at Ultimate Fight Night 2 and beat Joe Stevenson by triangle choke in the second round.

His next two fights were losses. He defeated Din Thomas by TKO at UFC Fight Night: Florian vs Lauzon and then was submitted by Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs Neer.

In his professional career, Neer has also worked as a doctor. He was a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and earned his doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He married Gloria Pyle Neer and moved to Florida where they lived and practiced.

Achievements and Honors

For more than 30 years, Neer has been an integral part of the success that defines Rochester basketball. He has led the Yellowjackets to four Final Fours and a national championship, making him one of the most accomplished coaches in program history.

But while his coaching record is impressive, it’s the impact he has had on student-athletes that is even more noteworthy. He has mentored nine All-Americans and nine CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, including recent graduate Richie Bonney.

When he took over the Hobart program in 2011, Neer paced it to 23 wins against just six losses, winning the Liberty League regular season title by three games and earning an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. It was the first Liberty League championship in school history and also the Statesmen’s most decisive NCAA victory.

John Neer was born in Columbus, Ohio. He passed away on March 12, 2022 at the age of 72.

John was raised in the country, learning a strong work ethic that helped him become a steadfast Navy Sailor and Chief of Boat. He made a special connection with everyone he came in contact with; whether a Sailor, fellow Shipyard worker or outside contractor.

He loved his family and especially his wife Marge. She was a very generous person, making sure her children had the best possible life. She always found time for her friends and the Providence Child Care Guild was a key part of her social life.
