The Ravenel family has a long-standing presence in Charleston. Notable landmarks include John Ravenel House, located across from The Battery, and Pinckney Island – named for a member of their family who served as Governor of South Carolina.

Thomas Ravenel, a former Southern Charm cast member who was accused of sexual misconduct earlier this year, was arrested today and charged with assault and battery in the second degree. This arrest came after his nanny for his daughter appeared in court.

Early Life and Education

Henry William Ravenel was born on May 19, 1814 at Pooshee Plantation in present-day Berkeley County, South Carolina and graduated from Pineville Academy in 1829 and South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) in 1832. Following his education, he returned to his inherited plantation as its gentleman planter.

Ravenel pursued botany as a means of making a living and amassed an impressive collection of botanical specimens. Additionally, he published several natural history publications and exchanged specimens with prominent American naturalists like Charles Hyde Olmstead, John Bachman, Moses Ashley Curtis, and Asa Gray.

Ravenel has authored several novels, such as Kate Beaumont (1872), which depicts social life in Charleston before the Civil War. His other major works include The Bloody Chasm (1881), which tells a tale of corruption in Washington D.C. during President Ulysses S. Grant; Honest John Vane (1875); and Playing the Mischief (1875), all examples of Ravenel’s realism.
