Early Life and Education
John Sunwoo developed an interest in architecture from an early age. As a teenager, he took part in two volunteer home-building trips to informal settlements on the fringes of Tijuana. As a result, his interest in architecture and building structures with the purpose of improving people’s lives deepened. As such, he became a registered architect and founding partner of Palette Architecture. With 82 peer-reviewed articles to his name and participation in 5 clinical trials, he is now Director of Head and Neck Cancer Research at Stanford University where he specializes in surgical management of head and neck cancers as well as thyroid and parathyroid gland neoplasms. Furthermore, Sunwoo serves on the Pigmented Lesions and Melanoma Clinic and Thyroid and Parathyroid Tumor Board at Stanford University.

John Sunwoo is an esteemed surgeon certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. His specialties include surgical oncology (cancer surgery) and otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat).
He has been practicing medicine since 2008, currently serving as the Director of Head and Neck Cancer Research at Stanford University. His accomplishments are numerous; most notably, being the first to identify tumor stem cells and their connection with immunity. Other noteworthy roles include founding member of both Pigmented Lesions & Melanoma Clinic and Thyroid and Parathyroid Tumor Board at Stanford – an honor well deserved after many years of service on behalf of this collaborative board made up of academic centers and hospitals from around the country that includes over 100 physicians and scientists.
