John Vanderkooy is a physics professor at University of Waterloo. He is one of the founding members of the Audio Research Group at the University.

Vanderkooy was an exemplary student, graduating with high honors from the University of Waterloo. In addition to his academic achievements, he was also involved in a number of extracurricular activities.
He was a member of the university’s physics club and served on its board of directors. He was also a founding member of the university’s audio research group and was one of the editors of its AES Journal.
He has been active in the community, serving as president of the Chatham-Kent chapter of Special Olympics. For his efforts, he was selected as one of 10 Canadians to represent the province at an international torch run in the UAE.
John Vanderkooy was a seasoned professional engineer, having spent the majority of his career working for Hewlett Packard in the company’s Microwave Lab. He was an expert in RF measurement methods and was responsible for the design of the HP 8566 Spectrum Analyzer, one of the most advanced pieces of equipment ever built.
He joined the Holland Fire Department as a Part-Paid Firefighter in July of 2003 and was promoted to Full Paid Firefighter in March 2005. He was also an outstanding father who enjoyed his family immensely. His favorite activity was camping, sailing and skiing with his wife of over 40 years, Kay. He also liked to wind surf. The best part of all was the time spent with his grandkids. The other best parts of his life were being part of the Burlington Police Department and working as a fire inspector for the City of Oakville.
