Athlete Takeover at USI

This week, the University of Southern Indiana Swimming Program will be featured on Instagram through an athlete takeover. On Wednesday, USI swimmer Liam Murray will take over and answer followers’ queries.

Murray first began sketching out his debut novel while studying English literature with creative writing at Queen’s University Belfast, before writing it during his PhD studies in England several years later.

Early Life and Education

Liam Murray Bell hails from Orkney and was raised in Glasgow before attending Queen’s University Belfast to study English Literature with Creative Writing, where the seeds for his debut novel So It Is began taking root.

Liam had an unstable home life as a young child and was placed into foster care. Consequently, his early school experiences were less-than-stellar; academically speaking he lagged behind five years.

At Brookwood Secondary in Langley, British Columbia, he was selected for both provincial and international rugby teams, representing Canada in Rugby Americas Selects and Pacific Pride Academy tournaments. Today he plays as a loosehead prop with Dallas Jackals of Major League Rugby.

Professional Career

Murray amassed an 8-2-1 (1NC) record in smaller promotions before signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and making his UFC 52 debut, where he defeated Jorge Rivera via triangle choke/armbar submission.

Liam joined Hempsons as a trainee solicitor in 2021, serving in their healthcare litigation, real estate, and commercial corporate teams. He provides assistance both bidders and contracting authorities regarding public procurement processes; in addition to providing wider litigation advice pertaining to contractual and property disputes.

Murray Murray hails from Langley, British Columbia where he played high school rugby at Brookswood Secondary and club rugby for PRCs Valley Central and Langley RFC. Murray currently represents Canada on their national rugby team as well as making appearances in Major League Rugby (MLR) for Houston SaberCats during 2021.

Murray Bell holds a Master of Arts in English Literature with Creative Writing from the University of Glasgow and his work has been published in both literary and academic journals. Additionally, Murray instructs at WEA Write Now Masterclass Weekend.

Early this year, Murray was honored with the Celtic Ross West Cork Youth Sports Star quarterly award. This prestigious recognition celebrates talented young athletes from varying sports. Four candidates are recognized each quarter; these four go forward to compete for an annual West Cork Youth Sports Star prize.

Murray was chosen to represent Canada U20 at the Rugby Americas Selects tournament held in Montevideo, Uruguay in 2021. Additionally, he has represented BC Bears in Canadian Rugby Championship league play.
