Early Life and Education
Many countries require children attending formal early childhood education and care (ECEC) services to bring their own lunch. Australian studies show that between 30%-50% of ECEC service-children’s lunch boxes contain non-necessity items [11-12].
This research employed an app-based intervention to address parent barriers to packing healthy lunches for their children. It consisted of an initial push notification message and weekly within-app messages delivered using this format; most ECEC services and parents agreed that using an app as a delivery vehicle for information (6/8, 75%; respectively).
Data was gathered on Early Care and Education services, child lunch box outcomes, parental characteristics and eating behavior assessments before beginning and then 10 weeks post delivery of intervention. Eating behaviors were measured using weighted food records before and after meals which were digitally photographed for verification of weight and to identify food waste; then analysed using FoodWorks Nutrition Analysis Software in order to generate core food group serve data on both packed and consumed foods.
