Mara Thomas is an author, musician, and teaching artist who blogs monthly for Artist Soapbox and facilitates workshops focused on creative accountability and functional feedback.

Senator O’Mara represents New York State Senate District 58, covering Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Tioga Counties and parts of Allegany County. Her practice specializes in estate planning, probate administration and elder law matters.

Early Life and Education

Thomas is a versatile playwright, actor, musician and teacher based out of Durham. Since age 16, Thomas has been making waves on the Durham music scene performing punk rock concerts. Her talents extend further, however; she composes music, directs productions and teaches classes while working towards her Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree.

In the film, she plays a criminal psychologist haunted by an evil demon known as Brugada Syndrome that kills people while they sleep. Written and directed by Clive Tonge and Jonathan Frank, their film explores both conditions associated with sleep paralysis as well as its mythology.

Professional Career

Mara specializes in complex commercial litigation matters in state and federal courts. Her expertise lies in developing case strategies, drafting pleadings, managing discovery, and drafting dispositive motions.

She is the great-granddaughter of Art Rooney and Wellington Mara – two men responsible for founding both Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants respectively – that helped transform the NFL into one of America’s most beloved professional sports leagues.

Mara hasn’t appeared much on-screen recently, but was coaxed into returning for a small role on 2016’s Broad City and voice acting for Helluva Boss (an animated series). Additionally, Mara currently works at Proteon Pharmaceuticals as Head of Aquaculture Product Management where she leads end-to-end project development efforts for their portfolio of aquaculture bacteriophage products.

Achievement and Honors

Mara specializes in all aspects of complex commercial litigation, from discovery drafting and management, motions for summary judgment defense and appeals handling, to pro bono immigration matters such as asylum or deportation cases.

Mara was asked at her audition for Mrs Doubtfire how she would react if her father were to dress as a woman; unlike some of her fellow actors who displayed subdued reactions, Mara laughed out loud on the floor – ultimately winning her the role.

Mara was honored for her commitment to libraries by New Yorkers for Better Libraries with the 2016 Library Champion Award. As an advocate for public library advancement, she serves on the Board of New York State Library.

Personal Life

After Matilda, Mara decided not to act in any more films in order to enjoy her teenage years fully. Today she works as a stage actress, voice actor and writer; in addition, she blogs monthly for Artist Soapbox as well as co-facilitating workshops focusing on creative accountability and functional feedback.

Her most recent film is Thomas and the Magic Railroad, in which she plays Lily Stone.

Mara Thomas is the daughter of Alan and Jane Thomas and graduated from Idyllwild School of Music & Arts before enrolling at New York University for study. Unfortunately, during production of this film her mother passed away; while her father served for over thirty-five years on Providence Fire Department before retiring as battalion chief.

She has also written for screen, with her play Sheeple appearing at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2013.
