Early Life and Education
Florence Selina Harriet Young was born in Motueka to Henry Young and Catherine Anne Eccles. Initially she was quite shy but ran away at age 18 to Sydney where she established prayer meetings for planter’s families and spearheaded the growing Scriptural Union to reach Melanesian sugarworkers with gospel. Florence applauded their kindness as well as customs that she considered heathen. But she strongly disapproved of their customs that she felt were contrary to Christian teachings as well as addictions to ‘white men’s vices’.
Henry was a long-term student of Hans Hofmann, and his work ranges from pure abstract patterning to narrative-rich paintings with interactive and prophetic elements that provoke visceral responses in audiences. It’s always exciting presenting Henry’s paintings!
