Early Life and Education

Steven Special grew into an award-winning author and speaker. Additionally, he served as state legislator where his efforts on power industry issues earned national renown.

He was known for his creative and rebellious spirit as a child, pushing boundaries and breaking conventions to break new ground in music, film, digital publishing and beyond.

He loved playing music with friends in various bands including West the Band. He spent a great deal of his career touring with West the Band and performing many shows across North America and Europe. Additionally, he wrote numerous books over time. Most importantly, however, he was an incredible individual whom everyone who knew him will miss greatly.

Each Spring, Stevens students with outstanding achievements from the previous academic year are honored with Student Awards. These honors recognize and celebrate our student and alumni’s efforts during that period.

Steve was honored with a Wilson Lecturer appointment in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and has given numerous guest presentations to faculty and students at UNI. Together with his wife Merry, they established the Alfred E. and Miriam J. Heilmann Endowed Chemistry Scholarship – giving back over 23 years to support UNI.

He is listed as an inventor on over 100 issued patents, has co-authored or written about more than 76 research publications, and won 3M’s highest technical accolade – the Carlton Society Award. Additionally, in 2021 he was honored by Health Physics Society with their Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award.

Personal Life

Steven Glink is an esteemed attorney specializing in school law (student discipline and teacher/principal dismissals) and criminal defense. Initially practicing at Cook County Juvenile Court fighting for children’s rights before joining a firm that specialized exclusively in school law to gain an intimate knowledge of Illinois School Code intricacies as well as board of education processes across Illinois.

Students have recently raised concerns regarding the significance of the Steven Special dishes found at La Huerta and Jose’s off Sunset restaurants, yet staff at both locations claim not to know who or why this special is named after Steven.

Many have theorized that the Steven Special is named after one of its owner’s friends or relatives.
