Psychological Research on Thoma (Hentai)

Although anime/manga are immensely popular, there has been relatively limited psychological research conducted on its fanbase. This book seeks to fill this void by providing an in-depth survey covering almost ten years of research on this fandom.

Note that in Japanese, “hentai” does not connote sexuality as it does in English. Indeed, it’s an English loanword which has acquired its present meaning through use within western manga and anime fandom communities.

Hentaiseiyoku resonates strongly with contemporary queer studies, where non-normative sexual fantasies are explored and celebrated across various forums. Although words like ‘queer” or “pervert” carry negative connotations in English, whereas “hentai” in Japan has never been used to disparage homosexual acts or activities–something evidenced by Fushimi Noriaki’s use of this word for his collection of interviews with gay salarymen titled [hentai (kuia) Nyumon].

Studio Proteus, a manga import, translation, and lettering company established by Toren Smith, features many works influenced by hentai themes – particularly sadomasochism – such as self-published doujinshi titles and crowdfunded Source Filmmaker monster videos set in game worlds. Furthermore, Tomma’s character design has been featured prominently in multiple doujinshi projects.

Personal Life

Thoma is an easygoing and friendly individual who takes great pleasure in being loyal. Thanks to his sociability and precise judgment, he has amassed many friends and acquaintances – though never for personal gain; rather he secretly arranges deals that benefit Yashiro Commission members instead.

Mondstadt’s relaxed environment made him comfortable mingling with people and forging bonds quickly; yet he held strong to his position as the Kamisato clan’s housekeeper and did not wish to jeopardise it in any way.

At home he can be seen cleaning the teahouse or knitting sweaters; in his free time, however, he also enjoys playing with cute animals. His infectious smile brings joy and cheer to everyone around him.
