Tom van Steenbergen has had an incredible run at this year’s Red Bull Rampage. Here’s his front flip attempt on an extremely steep drop – unfortunately he couldn’t ride away!
Thomas Steenbergen is one of the co-founders and organizers of TODO Group Europe as well as Head of Open Source Program Office at EPAM Systems. In addition, he contributes to SPDX and OSS Review Toolkit.
Early Life and Education
Thomas Steenbergen was born in 1838 to R P Steenbergen and Levisa Steenbergen and was one of four siblings.
As a junior, he won the Middle Atlantic Conference singles championship and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, garnering All-America honors both individually and as part of a doubles partnership.
He was also active in researching the effects of physical disability on locomotive and visual functioning, linking science with practice while being concerned for people who require monitoring or rehabilitation programs.
Steenbergen currently resides in Easton, Connecticut with his wife Lyla (Mussler) Steenbergen ’76 and daughter Madelyn who is in her Radiology Residency program at Yale New Haven Hospital. Both parties take pride in her accomplishments as well as in contributing to the community.
Thomas van Steenbergen is an internationally recognized freeride mountain biker who has competed in the Red Bull Rampage event. He is best known for his 70 foot front flip attempt featured in Anthill Film UnReal; unfortunately it proved successful but left Steenbergen injured due to impact with his spine.
As co-founder/organizer of TODO Group Europe and SPDX Automation Work Group – industry working groups dedicated to open source challenges – and core contributor of the OSS Review Toolkit, which allows highly automated compliance checks in CI/CD environments, he works on building wider open source communities.
As an open source conference speaker and technical lead in various roles across Netherlands, UK and Germany. He welcomes any and all discussions related to open source.
Achievement and Honors
Thomas Steenbergen was the first Belgian ever to win both Tour de France and Paris-Roubaix twice, holding records for most wins at both races. Additionally, in 2007 he became only rider ever to win both E3 Harelbeke and Gent-Wevelgem in one season; then placed second at Paris-Roubaix just a week later.
He won the Tour of Qatar, two stages of Tirreno-Adriatico and finished second overall at Milan-San Remo before winning E3 Prijs Vlaanderen-Harelbeke before coming third place at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad the following week.
