Vera Adams – A Lifelong Weymouth Resident

Vera Adams is a medical doctor specializing in treating mental illnesses. She assesses patients before prescribing medications like antidepressants, mood stabilizers, stimulants and sedatives to them.

She is best-known for her role in Creature from the Black Lagoon, as well as other successful movies she has appeared in.

Early Life and Education

Vera Adams had lived her entire life in Weymouth and graduated from Weymouth High in 1958. Following that she took up employment with New England Telephone in Quincy before ultimately working with Sullivan Insurance where she met many lifelong friends.

She was an incredible grandmother and friend who always provided support during good and difficult times for family and friends alike. She loved flowers and had many hobbies including crocheting, sewing and playing bridge.

Adams was tragically shot and killed while sipping coffee in her sunroom at her Weymouth home on Torrey Street. Emanuel Lopes fired three rounds through the glass enclosure; one hit Adams directly in her chest; she died shortly thereafter, sending shockwaves through the neighborhood. Her death left many residents grieving in its wake.

Professional Career

Vera Adams was an invaluable member and servant of the U.S. 19 Church of Christ and hosted Bible studies regularly at her home. Always available to support fellow brothers and sisters through happy or sad times, Vera always made herself available when needed.

Adams made many lasting friendships at New England Telephone and Sullivan Insurance in Quincy where she made many long-lasting acquaintances. She enjoyed reading, traveling to Cape Cod and making new ones along the way. Adams is survived by her son, daughter-in-law, three grandchildren and numerous relatives.

At Weymouth’s new library being constructed on Broad Street, her family has established a memorial fund in her name at Weymouth’s Vera Institute of Justice to establish a reading room dedicated to her in her honor. Donations should be sent directly to this address instead of sending flowers in lieu. These funds will be used as reading room funding. Vera Institute of Justice acts as a justice reform change agent by producing ideas, analysis and research that inspire real change within systems people rely on for safety and justice.

Achievement and Honors

Adams relied heavily on Iscol to assist in his mayoral campaign and run Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz’s borough government before she established an office dedicated to COVID-19 response and community health in New York.

Jiha was previously Executive Director at NYCEDC and served on its board, in addition to serving on that of a public housing corporation. Now she leads a newly created agency dedicated to affordable housing preservation and development.

Vera Adams was murdered along with Michael Chesna on July 15 by Emanuel Lopes, and her obituary described her life as being quiet and modest – enjoying reading, dinners with friends and trips to Cape Cod. Personal Life

Vera Adams led an understated, humble lifestyle without ever letting that dampen her love for family and friends. Her children called her Auntie Vera; Cynthia MacDonald’s grandchildren thought of Vera Adams as one of their own sisters as well.

Vera Adams was remembered Tuesday in her obituary, published after she was shot and killed while sitting in her sunroom on Torrey Street earlier this month. Her kindness was widely lauded in this publication.

Her family was taken aback when thousands of police officers lined the streets with their helmets off in respect as they carried her body from her funeral home to Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree – marking an emotional yet fitting endpoint for someone who touched so many lives during her short lifetime.

Vera Adams lived a simple lifestyle, yet took great pleasure from spending time with family and friends. She was the loving wife of Donald Adams who passed away in 1993; cousin to Karen Kneeland from Mashpee and Gina Puntiri of Plymouth; niece to Florence Mulready in South Weymouth.
